Being able to fit a gaming PC inside of an elegant laptop shell is something only Alienware can pull off.
At a price of $4,500, The Alienware Area-51m promises to be very powerful with desktop grade spec. To be more specific, we are looking at a laptop with Core i9-9900k, paired with the high-end RTX 2080 graphics. Not only it crushes triple-A gaming titles, its turbo boosted CPU does a great job at rendering and processing 4K video projects. All those powers is displayed through a 114hz Full HD panel with G-sync and Tobii eye tracker.
The expandability on the Area-51m is unbelievable: 2,5 inch drive bay, two M.2 SSD slots and 4x DDR4 RAM Just to make it better, all the components above, including the CPU, GPU and wifi card are replaceable so your laptop can always be equipped with latest components.
Having a gaming beast contained under the hood, Dell still managed to create such an exquisite design for a bulky 17-inch laptop. The chassis is made out of aluminium and magnesium alloy, which makes the whole body feels rigid. The aesthetic is really nice with RGB on the logo, trackpad, keyboard and the backside. Port selections are many on this device with Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 2.0 and Ethernet. The keyboard feels tactile even compare to flagship Razer and Asus laptops, although the trackpad is quite muddy, and the speakers aren’t as good as it should be.
Having desktop CPU can make your laptop very powerful, but those i9 cores aren’t going to charge itself. Carrying a 90Wh battery, you only have about 2 hours before the laptop drains it completely. Chances are you have to bring along the two large AC adapters to maximize the power. This is where the flaws appears: it’s too big to fit in a backpack, it always needs to be plugged in. Thermal performance is notoriously bad in alienware lineups, and this laptop is no exception. When gaming or doing high-pressured tasks, the whole system often hit 100 degree Celsius mark and the fan spins at high speed. This raises the question of whether this laptop can withstand higher processor.
The Alienware Area-51m might seem like a complete overkill when it comes to portable laptop, but for someone who wants a desktop replacement, this totally does the job.
